The MHRA has approved a new single-dose 7.2mg Wegovy pen that provides the maximum weekly dose of semaglutide for weight loss.

The new Wegovy pen is indicated for adults with a BMI of 30kg/m² or higher.  

The decision follows the January approval of the 7.2mg maximum weekly dose via three 2.4mg doses administered on the same day using a standard 2.4mg pen.

The starting dose for patients using Wegovy is 0.25mg per week, “which will be gradually increased every four weeks as required and prescribed by the appropriate healthcare professional,” said the MHRA. 

The medicines regulator said it will “keep the safety and effectiveness of Wegovy under close review,” adding that patients with suspected side effects should speak to their pharmacist, doctor or nurse and report it via the Yelllow Card scheme.
